And then, there came the cults of Disturbed and Godsmack, who battled valiantly to restore metal's sacred crown after it had been defiled by grunge, late-90's pop, and the traitorous abominations of Korn and Limp Bizkit. Though originally mere mortals, their devotion to the metal caused the metal gods to make them iron deities in their own right.

...sorry dude, no offenes, and to each his own, but Disturbed and haha
Damn-Yuki Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2009  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Well I could have listed Dragonforce and Avenged Sevenfold, too. (yes, I do actually like them) However, I'm sure you don't think any higher of them, so ehh. :P

(genuinely curious) who would you list as the new Gods of Metal?
Chip8088 Featured By Owner Aug 4, 2009
Well it's all a matter of opinion. I think that the most influential metal bands out there are Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Metallica, but if you want to get very technical, Venom influenced all of Thrash, Death, and Black metal. Death helped push along Death Metal. Pantera brought on Groove metal. Dream Theater are still the leaders of Prog. It all depends on your taste. For me, the ultimate metal god is Devin Townsend, but once again, that's just my personal opinion.

As for Dragonforce, they're ok, just wayy too flashy. Thier songs lack substance and are mainly just long wank sessions. Thier new album, i hear, is alot better about that though, so who knows. And no, i dont' like Avenged Sevenfold. haha i like Almost Easy and that's it.
Damn-Yuki Featured By Owner Aug 5, 2009  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I agree with you on all of those! I wasn't saying Disturbed and Godsmack had replaced them, (we'd be in trouble if they had) just that they kinda helped to rebuild metal after the disgrace that was rap-metal. For me, Rage Against the Machine and Linkin Park were the only rap-metal bands that were ever worth listening to.

And I'm glad to hear that you still like Metallica! Too many of the people I've met keep spouting this garbage about how they're "sellouts". I'll admit, most of their stuff from the Load era wasn't even close to Master of Puppets, but it was nice to see them try something new, instead of just pounding ahead with the same strategy.

Yeah, I know Dragonforce are all about the obnoxious flashiness, but I guess that I don't mind as much about that, seeing as I've never been to a concert. One thing I would like to see 'em try is to cut an album that has more than one song that's shorter than five minutes on it. It'd be nice if they also tried making songs that they can survive playing onstage. But that's just what getting into Slayer has made me want. XD

In a band are you? Judging by your deviations you guys play some NWOBHM inspired thrashy stuff, am I right? Where do ya'll play, like where are you from?
Chip8088 Featured By Owner Dec 31, 2008
Nah, all my deviations are old and outdated to my current musical tastes. We're located in south carolina and recently formed. Each member of the band brings something different. Lately i've been very into Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend, but i've always been a big thrash fan, while our bassist is big into mastadon and jazz and progressive styles. I can't really say what our style is because we have so many different sounds. For example we have 2 songs that are very progressive and wierd, but then we have a thrashy kinda song with a nice hook, and then we have a song that sounds like NWOBHM and power metal.

We havent' been able to record any demos yet however, there's the myspace

Alright, i'll keep in touch with you guys, listen for music, I'll add you guys to my band's friends. We're a thrash/experimental band from Houston, Texas...and we're just getting started, a few gigs and a small fanbase right now. Check us out, we're called Threnodic.

almost anything on the mediaskare label. thats something you deff would not hear on the radio. bands like As Blood Runs Black, WhiteChapel, Born of Osiris, Winds of Plauge, those types of metalcore bands are great because they are all almost death metal. the only core aprt about them are the break downs. they all have solos and blast beats and amazing vocals that all are derived from death metal and a little black metal sometimes. and to the crusade statement: i agree it sounds like maiden and metallica with james vocals, that was all done on purpose. "The Crusade" title is in reference to "crusade" of heavy metal and what its gone through and almost the entire album is sort of like a tribute to the bands before them that they grew up loving. the next record from what theyve said, is supposed to sound like trivium and not everyone else.
Chip8088 Featured By Owner May 29, 2008
I'll look into those bands, but as for trivium, there's no harm in sounding like a band, but when you take the exact same riffs and just move them around, it's not too impressive
deadlyaim06 Featured By Owner May 25, 2008
so yeah, lots of this is bad.

-dragonforce came out AFTER blind guardian, but im pretty sure someone commented on that.
-wine and beer = alcohol. no need to put "wine, beer and alcohol"
-wtf is chuck schuldiner? the effing FATHER of death metal.
-trivium WAS metalcore. they switched to a thrash sound since they didnt want to sound like metalcore.
-you forgot hardcore
-manson is nu metal/industrial.
-you forgot aerosmith's/anthrax's first attempts at rap metal, or "nu metal"
-KISS is deff not metal. hard rock at most. rock at least.
-wheres all the death metal?
-wheres all the prog metal? dream theater? come on guy.
-wheres black metal?
-metalcore is still metal. and a lot of it is waaaay more technical than manson or metallica ever could hope to be. im not talking about killswitch engage and lamb of god. im talking about As Blood Runs Black and White Chapel and all that. all though that could be considered as deathcore, but alas, i digress.
-wheres industrial?
-and to IRONMAIDENFAN6: exodus was never as famous as Anthrax is. if you want to put exodus in the same boat as those four, you could also say the same for Testament. by discography Anthrax had an album out on a label a year before Exodus did.
-you forgot Stratovarious in the speed metal genre.
-and i think Dethklok deff needs to be in there for giggles :]
-WHERES RANDY!?!?!?!?!
-Tim "The Ripper" Owne deff does not need to be here. if anything, hes a sound-a-like and doesnt need to be mentioned over chuck or randy.
-Zakk, where art tho?
-you put lars in over cliff? have you no shame?
-Avenged Sevenfold isnt metalcore since they have no breakdowns. their first cd that is arguable but not their newer stuff.
-Megadeth deff is not more violent or aggressive than Slayer. thats just silly.
-what about Paul Di'Anno? he was in Maiden before Bruce was.
-Metallica: The drama queens of metal.

thats all, but pretty good in the beginning.
Chip8088 Featured By Owner May 27, 2008
Yeah i wrote this ages ago, before i was subjected to alot of the metal i know today
So to put your complaints at rest, i'll demonstrate my current knowledge of metal
and apologize for my past ignorance:

At the time, Dragonforce was huge and i didn't know many other power metal bands
Idk why i did that wine and beer thing
I hadn't heard much Death at the time, and i really regret that, because i'm a big Death fan as of now
Trivium were metalcore, and now they're the standard mallcore shit. i'm sorry dude but they suck
Hardcore isn't metal, unless you're refering to the mallcore shit that is mislabeled as "hardcore". Real hardcore, like the Misfits, Samhain, OLD AFI, etc, is hardcore punk
Idr what i put for manson
I didn't cover those topics because they were minor and not full genres
KISS is hard rock, which is closely associated with metal
I didn't know much death metal back then (once again i regret that)
Same with prog
Same with Black Metal (the most i heard was COF which i'm not a big fan of)
I'm sorry dude, but metalcore sucks. In all honesty, Lamb of God and Killswitch are the only ones i can tolerate, but i despise Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for my Valentine, and bands such as those
Did i not put industrial? if i did i would have Ministry, White/Rob Zombie, Manson, etc. i'm not huge into industrial
In my personal opinion, i love Testament and Exodus more then anthrax.
Once again, i plead ignorance
Hahaha i should have put Dethklok in there
Idk why i forgot him too.
Dude, Tim Owen is awesome, maybe not for Judas Priest, but for Iced Earth and all the other things he's accomplished.
Haha once again, idk. i didn't have everybody on there
Did i really!? Goddamn...I'm sorry Cliff.
You and I have different views on metalcore, but i guess Avenged Sevenfold would fall more under the Mallcore crap
They're far fucking better then slayer though. haha
He may have been before Bruce, but Bruce Dickinson is the main singer, and my personal idol, of Iron Maiden
They are now, but back in the day they were great. Me and my friend actually wrote a song called "Why Does Metallica Suck So Bad Now" for fun which tell our sorrow of they're downfall. (its on a myspace if you're interested. haha)

Hope that clears some things up. Stay fuckin heavy :horns:
deadlyaim06 Featured By Owner May 27, 2008
hahaha if your going to associate hard rock with metal then you gotta associate hardcore. hardcore is just punk and metal. im not standing up for trivium, but if you listen to the crusade, they deff do not sound core at all. no screaming or anything. and yes, you should be sad for cliff!!! theres bad metalcore, and theres good metalcore. anything you hear on the radio is bad metalcore. you gotta dig into the scene to get to the good stuff. but overall pretty good imo.
Chip8088 Featured By Owner May 28, 2008
Well hardcore isn't really metal and punk, that's thrash. Hardcore is more like punk, but more aggressive. But metal is much more closely associated with metal to most metalheads, and hardcore isn't quite as much. and i've heard the crusade (or parts of it) and it is different, but it isn't good enough to be labeled thrash. it sounds like stolen maiden/metallica riffs with James hetfield wannabe vocals. haha sorry if that sounds harsh or anything. i may end up revising the whole thing later. What would you call good metalcore?
IRONMAIDENFAN6 Featured By Owner May 24, 2008
